I found your gallery module on snowcovered and jumpped to your website to look at in and find out more info about it. I currently use the core gallery module and have over 1000 photos broken up across many gallery modules. I have done this because the core gallery can not handle that many photos in one module without performace problems. I am also looking for a gallery module that stores the photo images (source, resized, thumbnails) in a better way. The questions I have are: 1) Does your module support import of data/photos from the core gallery module? 2) How does your module store data/photos? (File Paths for galleries, comments, descriptions, meta data, etc.) I'm looking for information in relation to how the core gallery stores its data/photos (i.e. meta data stored in xml formated files / photo directory structure for source, resized, & thumbnail images) 2a) Is the directory where image files stored configurable? Is the resized/thumbnail image storage directory configurable separately from source directory? 3) What are the performance implications for 1000+ photos? Should the photos be broken up into defferent gallery modules or can one module handle this many photos with no problem/performance issues?

Thanks for your questions,

1) Does your module support import of data/photos from the core gallery module?

Yes, there is a satelitte module named "MediaImporter" which is delivered along with the main module, this module can import pictures within a directory in your portal.

2) How does your module store data/photos?

All files are stored in file system, files means the display photo, the thumbnail, and the linked download for the photo, and the meta data are all saved in database. when you create an new album, this module will create a folder in $Portal root/UltraPhotoGallery/$Album Id, and there will be some sub directories to store display picture, thumbnail, music... etc.

2a) Is the directory where image files stored configurable? Is the resized/thumbnail image storage directory configurable separately from source directory?

The directory is fixed to the path I mentioned, and it is managed by the module, you don't need to care about it; the thumbnails are stored in a specific sub directory, the folder name is also fixed.

3) What are the performance implications for 1000+ photos? Should the photos be broken up into defferent gallery modules or can one module handle this many photos with no problem/performance issues?

There is no photo count limitation in this module, the only limitation is the performance of client computer, generally you can hold 1000 pictures in single galery, but I suggest you to divide them by "Albums". for example, you can create 10 albums in single gallery, and each of them has 100 pictures, this will help your visitors to find specific picture.

Thanks.

Thanks for your response.  I would have posted a thanks earlier but was starting to set up the new Gallery module as I have gone ahead and bought it.

I do have one comment though as I now re-read your responses.  It would be nice if your import module did more then just import the photo files from the core module.  Like if it read the _metadata.resource (xml formated) files that the core gallery uses to store the title, name, description fields and various other info that is manually entered into the UMG module.  Even though I have a lot of photos imported by using the Import module I have a massive amount of manual work to re-type all the descriptions/titles into the new gallery when it could have been done with the photo import.

If this functionality can be added it could be a major draw for all the folks that use the core gallery module knowing it would be an easy convert to yours. :)

I really appreciate your suggestions, I'll consider to add a new option in MediaImporter module, to import pictures in core gallery module, actually I design this module in this way, it can have many ways to import pictures.

Thanks.
