Is it possible for the product to just save to pdf the contents of a particular module/container on the page?

yes. as long as you can get the url to see the contents of particular module, "save as pdf" is able to conver it. some containers(like the DNN defautl container) offers a "print" link at module bottom, which allows you to see the contents of this specific module only. so you can pass the url to print this module to "save as pdf".
