Hello again,

This is a suggestion for improving the appearance of the module on dark skins.

I'm only part way through setting it up, but I can see two modules so far that use browser-generated scrollbars for content. These can't be restyled in any browser other than IE and so the page is already looking ugly with these white bars on it.

The suggestion to provide a DHTML scrollbar for any scrolled content. Then the module will be able to be fully skinned for non-white sites.

I'm not sure if the licensing of this one would be suitable for UVG, but it is one of the better scrollbars available and if you decide to look at this enhancement, it may be a good one to use.

You can see the demo scrollbar on the right of the page. It works well with a proper click and drag bar. Also special is that clicking on an empty spot in the bar will cause it to scroll into that area, just like a normal browser scrollbar (most scripts can't do this).

Best of all... it can be styled to suit any DNN site :)

It's a fantastic looking module otherwise and I've been looking forward for a long time to using it.

Regards,
Rob

I've only set up a few of the many modules that come with UVG so there may be more places that have the issue, but the most important and obvious place where the browser-generated bars get in the way is in the Video Player.

I've indicated them in red in the screen-grab here:

The tabs and everything else is proper HTML and can be styled, but those scrollbars cannot be styled across browsers because they aren't web content.

Internet Explorer provides a proprietary means of styling them, but that isn't suitable and it is not being picked up by the other makers because the idea is that those scrollbars are part of the web browser, not part of the web page, and therefore should not be included.

Thanks for considering this :) It would be fantastic if it got onto the roadmap somewhere in the future. I realize of course that there are many people asking for many features and you have to make the final decisions as you go along.

Regards,
Rob

Rob, I guess the scroll bar IS a part of the browser, I just tried to change the appereance of them by CSS, and it works.

Yes, exactly like I already said in my post above.

But - Only Internet Explorer provides a means of styling them because Microsoft added their own proprietary styles. It is non-standard CSS and the other browsers will not support it.

The logic is that the scrollbars are part of the browser application, not the web page (look at the page source - there is no code for them)

The official response from W3C on the matter is:

"Though it may make sense to design a styling mechanism to control the presentation of scrollbars, the MSIE scrollbar-*-color properties make too many assumptions about a particular scrollbar appearance design.  The working group considered adding the scrollbar-*-color properties and rejected them quite some time ago."

So, yes, they can be styled, but only in IE.

The solution I was suggesting is to implement scrolling content areas using proper code that can be interpreted by any standards-compliant web browser, not just IE.

Alternatively... maybe there's a better way to display those scrolled sections without relying on the browser scrollbar... maybe it could be paged in or something. I'll have a think about that if the scrolling seems difficult.

yes, it's difficult, currently I just set a css style so the browser handle the scroll, if I use the script library I have to do a lot of things.

however, I remember the comment module already support paging feature so you won't see the scoll bar.
