Hi there,

The new releases look fantastic as always.

I'm trying to view the demo of the new Widescreenshowroom presentation on this page:
http://www.bizmodules.net/tabid/157/Default.aspx
but it refuses to play it and says "Your Flash Player is too old or we cannot detect it. To view this gallery properly, please install Flash Player 8.0 or above."

I have the very latest Flash player installed on both IE and Firefox (installed today) but it still says that.

Regards,
Rob

It only doesn't work in IE. FF seems fine. Perhaps someone else can try and confirm

Ok,

I've seen this happen on my own site, and I've not taken the time to find a solution. My case is exactly the opposite. I can view in IE 7 but not FF. Go figure? Again, I have the same problem on my website on an embedded instance of the UMG module. IE can see it, but FF can't? And as with you Rob, I have the latest Flash Player installed.

ok, I've now installed the update and now it's also out of action on my portal, but only in IE.

I've only just rebuilt this computer in the last 24 hours and the Flash players and browsers are all 100% fresh.

Any advice is appreciated

Rob & Jeff,

this feedback is very important, but did you get this problem only with widescreenshowroom? what about other sample galleries on this website?

you know, all presentations use same script library to detect flash.

Hi,

Yes it is happening with all galleries here and now also on my own site. I've also checked the UVG demo, for example this one: http://www.bizmodules.net/Products/UltraVideoGallery2/VideoPlayer/tabid/125/VideoId/21/Mermaid-Song.aspx
and that also doesn't work - It's asking for Flash player 7 or above whereas the UMG demos are asking for player 8 and above.

I'm running a fresh install of Vista with SP1 and all other patches. IE7 is up to date with the latest Flash player downloaded today, but does not work with any demos.

Firefox is also up to date with today's flash player and does work fine with the demos.

I'll test it now with XP SP2 on a virtual PC:
IE6 works
Safari 3.1 works
Opera 9.x works

So that means it is only not working on IE7 with the current player.
Hope that helps.

Rob

I'm checking it now in IE7

This time the message reads "Your flash player is too old or we cannot detect it, to view this gallery properly please install flash player 8.0 or above."

And there is now a "Get Adobe Flash Player" icon above it - this wasn't there before.

I'll go through the whole process and let it install it again and see what happens.
It installs as normal and says "Version 9,0,124,0 installed successfully"
The "installation completion" movie displays correctly.

Now I'll return to your site and check

Nope.. still says the same thing:
"Your flash player is too old or we cannot detect it, to view this gallery properly please install flash player 8.0 or above. "

I'm still up for another 6 hours or so and can keep checking.

I've also just been to the flash version test page here:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_15507&sliceId=1

It says I've got version Win 9,0,124,0 in both IE and Firefox

It also says:
OS: Windows Vista
Video Encoder: true
Audio Capable: true
Local file I/O disabled: false

can you reset your IE settings to ensure all options are in default value?

UMG use SWFObject to render flash object, I upgraded swfobject in UMG from 1.5 to 2.0 to see if it works, thus you get a different message now.

I've now reset all IE settings to defaults but it is still the same.

I have now also carried out the possible fix suggested here:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=fb1634cb&sliceId=2
But it remains the same.

And further... I have noticed that there are a couple of sample sites linked from Adobe that also don't detect the player:
http://www.brightcove.com/
http://www.adobe.com/flashon

Both of the above don't detect the player.

But if I type "Flash demo" into Google and visit some sites, they all work:
http://www.business-edge.com/solutions/flash.asp

I'm also checking demos on this Flash 9 demo page at Adobe:
http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Flash_Player:9:Update:Full-Screen_Mode:Demos

Some of them work fine:
http://www.flashcomguru.com/apps/fullscreen_player9/fullscreen.html
http://webdesign-flash.ro/proiecte/player/video_player.html

But others do not:

!
That's just nuts. This is a fresh 1 day old installation of Vista, not upgraded or anything. No funny stuff installed either because I like a clean system.

But obviously there is something somewhere in the Flash detection and installation process that causes a problem. Adding to it is that the player continues to work fine on nearly everything but for a few of the latest sites.

In any case, I rebooted, disabled nearly every application that might use Flash, ran the un-installer linked from that site, rebooted again, visited your site here and let it detect and install the player once again. Then it worked.

Something in the process is certainly a bit delicate, but this is at least a working fix for those who have the problem.

Nice looking demo that widescreen one :)

So I guess that's fixed unless there's something that can be done on the modules to make them less sensitive to this sort of thing?

I'll change UMG and UVG so it still render the flash movie even the detection is fail, this is the only solution I can imagine.

I appreciate for all of your assistance with this issue.

thank you.

ok, I think this is a good solution, I already changed UMG and UVG so it priorly use swfobject to render the flash object but it handles the "click to activate" issue, if the flash detection failed, the traditional OBJECT tag is used to render the flash movie, since UMG & UVG have no idea if the visitor have necessary flash plugin to view this gallery in this case, there is always a "get adobe flash player" link in the bottom of the gallery.

so if you visit UMG with a computer like your computer before you fix this problem, you will be able to see both the gallery and the "get adobe flash player" link, this is not a user-friendly way but it is much better than that you can't see the gallery, isn't it?

this change is already uploaded to bizmodules.net, but not publicly released, I wish every one can help me to browse both UMG and UVG galleries on this website and let me know if it works.

thank you.

It really looks to me like Adobe needs to make the whole Flash installation, upgrade and fallback much more bulletproof than it is.

I also agree that the solution like yours here degrades much more gracefully than what was happening before and will definitely help avoid having people staring at blank screens.

The main thing that was missing from the entire experience today was a proper error message. At no point did anything in Flash or at Adobe suggest that there was any problem other than the wrong version of the player.

Let's see if Jeff or anyone else can check the demos and see what happens.

Thanks for trying to sort this out so promptly - as always

yes, I understand a clear error message may be quite helpful.

swfobject use ActiveXObject to get the flash version, but it seems this object doesnt' work on your computer some hour ago, so it simply says you don't have flash installed because it isn't able to get any further information.

thank you.
