Yes, this is different than an external folder option. It is a more narrow idea that will support Amazon S3 only but ultimately it is more scalable.

Having an external folder option is ok (separate backups etc.)  but if you have any kind of larger traffic it will be hard to support from your server anyway.

The Amazon S3 idea is briliant, it will really help ease the pain of always checking how much space is left on my server.

The latest release of UVG now supports Amazon S3......
