Looked through the forum and could not find anything for my question and the documentation was not detailed enough, so if I missed it please point to the post.
I am having videos created for my site that will be display using UVG 3. My video guy asked me what format and dimensions I wanted the final video, was not sure what to tell him. I know that UVG converts many none flv files to flv format with H264 encoding for pro version using the desktop converter, upload, or when you sync. But I do not know what to tell the video guy to give me. Currently he has stuff a Quick Time format with sizes ranging from 1 to 9 GB, play times of 1 to 9 minutes. I am sure that uploading a 9GB video is NOT a good idea.
So what would be the best format/size to get the videos in so that what is on the site has the best mix of performance and quality, displayed full screen? Does the UVG Converter down size the files? Does the video dimension make a difference?
I am generally ignorant when it comes to video stuff so I need guidance. Thanks.

actually the configuration regarding to video quality in UVG is pretty simple. you just need to configure the size of encoded video.
you can try different size options to see which one is best for your server, if you have a high speed server you can have higher video resolution, vice versa.
for advanced users, you can check the "bitrage manager" chapter in UVG user guide to further adjust video quality.

I'm back to this question again, as I have various outcomes; for example:
When I produce a video, i can output it in various formats (avi, mpg, wmv, mp4, etc)
When convert any of the formats using UVG converter, I get different quality results. The best combination for sharpness is mpg - however it is distorted (720x480) rather than 640x480)
All the other output formats are compressed before UVG converter further compresses and I get worse pixelation. We have our own web servers and stream the videos from S3.
I want to use the H26? for best quality. What format do you recommend before sending to the converter?

did you try UVG 4? the video quality in UVG 4 is much better.
in most case UVG keeps your original aspect ratio. however, in some rare cases UVG is not able to read it's originial aspect ratio so it may be distorted.
you can upload any high quality video format, .mov, .avi, .mpg, all are ok.
but you should prevent .rm or videos with 5.1 channels, UVG encodes them twice.

Thanks. I think I found that if I use custom settings in the UVG converter configuration.xml, and increase the bitrate of the original video to 6000kbs using mp4 640x480 then the converter does a pretty good job without degrading stuff too much. I do note that certain text colors like red get washed out pretty much so, I'm still trying different codecs to see which one's work best. Thanks for the warning about 5.1 channels.
PS, for other's read the User Guide carefully about the converter custom settings for use before uploading. (biteratemanager.xml - I believe)

the content of bitrate manager chapter is moved to "Video Quality Control" chapter in UVG 4.
however, in most case, you donot need to change it if you use UVG 4. because the video quality is pretty good under default configuration in UVG 4. you can take a look at our sample videos, all of them are encoded under default configuration.
