Hi there,

I've had UVG ever since being on the beta, but have not yet installed or used it, mainly because I risk a massive increase in the size of my backups when people want to start using it. This will wreck my backup procedures which are an important part of my risk management.

Is there any way to make the module use an external folder for storing videos? A bit like the core Repository allows, with an external path.

Is such a feature possibly already in version 2?

Regards,
Rob

no, not in UVG 2.

if you store it else where, is the backup procedure be easier?

Hi,

Yes, it would be far easier to backup if I could store videos in a folder outside of the portal, exactly like the core Repository.

I run daily backups that involve archiving the complete DNN portal system. Currently the portal is about 120Mb archived. If I have videos inside the portal system then it will blow out to several gigabytes over time and be impossible to archive and download.

The video files are much less important then the portal system itself and original copies of the files are kept offline in any case. The videos certainly don't need to be backed up every day like the portal does.

I notice that UVG 2 has some options for using external storage systems. I was basically wondering if you would be able to enhance that with the ability to specify a folder or network path.

Regards,
Rob

I've also just looked at screencast.com. They do commercial video file hosting that would be another good method of storing the files without impacting the portal istelf.

I would definitely consider using that for storing files.

Count my vote on this.. if the admin could specify what server to upload the files to it would ease the pain.. we're planning on using the Amazon S3 clound and would prefer not to maually transfer files.

big yes for this feature!

it will really make the module scalable.

Rengtsen, do you think this is an easy enhancement for our in-house developers to do?

I'm not familiar with amazon API, please learn it, if you can understand it well, it should be easy to you.

Another Vote, being able to store on Amazon S3 would be HUGE for us.

For some of the people that are voting for the feature (hopefully you have subscribed to this post).

I have discussed with Pengtsen and can sponsor this enhancement (the amazon s3 option). The cost is very reasonable but wanted to see if there are other people willing to pitch in so I don't have to cover it all by myself.

Thanks.

My main request when I started this thread was for a means of specifying any location outside of the portal for video file storage. Once set up, the module would still need to be able to manage all the files without further intervention from an administrator.. that means upload and delete and keep different people's and portal's files safe from each other etc.

S3 looks pretty good given that it only charges for actual usage, and I expect the performance would be good.

If Amazon S3 were used, would the administrator of a portal installation be able to set it up once for all users. Would it need a new S3 account per user, per module instance, per portal, per DNN installation?

I'm interested in whether this would be strictly S3 or perhaps a general external option... would one still be able to specify a local folder outside of the portal system?

I still haven't implemented UVG because of all this but would like to, so yes, depending on the details, I'd go in with you. I'm pretty sure Jack would as well.. nudge nudge?

1 s3 account should be enough to each DNN instance.

but this is different with your original idea, in this implementation you are not able to store videos in a folder outside your website.
