I don't have either of these modules yet, so I'm unable to determine whether this can be done. Can photos and videos be mixed within a single 'gallery'?  Or do all photos and videos have to be displayed in separate modules?

take a look at Products -> Ultra Media Gallery -> Samples in the top menu.

in this example I use UMG 5 "Widescreenshowroom" presentation to build a picture and video gallery, this presentation is able to play videos, so you can use it to play photos and videos in UVG together.

In UVG 2.3, you can embed a UMG gallery to UVG with the new "From embed code" video source, in this case a UMG gallery is treated as a video in UVG.
